International Forum for Nuclear-Free World

Date: 11.10.2011 – 13.10.2011
Location: Astana, Kazakhstan

In October 2011 Kazakhstan will hold an international forum for nuclear weapons free world dedicated to the 20th anniversary of closure of the Semipalatinsk test site. Kazakh President Nursultan Nazarbayev announced it during the nuclear safety summit in Kiev on Tuesday.

"The world's largest Semipalatinsk nuclear test site, which functioned on Kazakh soil, conducted 456 nuclear tests. The total effect is equivalent to 116 Chernobyl accidents. The consequences will be felt for a long time. One of the first decrees that I signed as President of Kazakhstan was a document on closing the Semipalatinsk test site," Nazarbayev said.

He reminded that last year the UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon visited the former Semipalatinsk test site and praised Kazakhstan's contribution to global nuclear disarmament.

The Kazakh President invited all interested international organizations and states to participate in the forum, which will be held in Kazakhstan.
