Song from the Southern Seas
Kazakhstan | 2008 | col | 84 mins | dir. Marat Sarulu, with Vladimir Yavorsky
Two couples, one Russian and one Kazak, are neighbours in a beautiful, semi-desolate region adjoining the arid grasslands of the Great Steppe. The couples live in intimate proximity, sharing one another's joys and woes, but when the fair-skinned Russians give birth to a boy with a decidedly darker complexion, the couples enter into a fifteen-year period of suspicion and acrimony. At times darkly sombre, at others tender and wistful – and buoyed throughout by a soundtrack of folk-inspired melodies – Sarulu's film considers the meaning of family at the crossroads of different cultures and histories.

With luck he can build up the business he has been dreaming of. A modern tale of money, trade, mafia and the morally complex world of the international black market.
